What a weekend at Brookleigh! In front of a knowledgeable crowd, forty-two of WA’s most talented young jumping horses jumped over two separate rounds to win the crown of Champion Horse at SRSJC’s prestigious 2017 Horseland Young Showjumping Horse Championship.
“All four finalists are talented with great futures ahead,” Paula said to the spectators, but Air Wings Z (Air Jordan Z x Wings Z x Wolishco DDH) stood out on the day as the unanimous choice for Paula and fellow judges Matt Godwin and Neil Ozanne. “The five year old group was especially competitive,” said Paula, reinforcing Air Wings win. But choosing the champion was still “a tough decision,” remarked Paula, who said she enjoyed jumping each of the four very different finalists in Sunday’s The Final Four young horse championship decider: stallion Air Wings Z plus two mares and a gelding – that included Caitlin Bolger’s Caprino (4-YO by Yalambi’s Carpino Z) and Oaks Quickstep (6YO by Quintender, co-owned with Oaks Sporthorses); and Bridget Kelly’s Noblewood Park Bella (7YO by Noblewood Park Beretta).
Air Wings’ win was the second consecutive champion title for Manjimup-based Jakoma Equestrian Park (JEP), which also won last year with its home-bred gelding JEP Matilda’s Boy (known now as JEP Texas), also ridden by Darren Taylor at the 2016 event . The stud’s boutique breeding programme was founded on its exceptional mare, Yalambi’s Waltzing Matilda, the inaugural winner of SRSJC’s Horseland Young Showjumping Horse Championship in 2011. Air Wings Z’s success at the 2017 Championship is win #3 for JEP and it looks like exciting times ahead for the stud with the input of such a promising young stallion.
“We’re so pleased to see the support that this event gets from sponsors and competitors,”said SRSJC Chair, Suzanne McGill.” Horseland was the foundation sponsor for the young horse series and continues to back us – and we’re so grateful for the support we receive from our age class sponsors, this year Jakoma, Yalambi, Finch Farm and Perth Performance Horses. Kevin Tully once again course designed for us at this show, creating inviting courses that enabled riders to show off the young horses over straightforward tracks.”
The weekend also included outstanding performances in Sunday’s other featured classes, with winners including horses that had placed in previous young horse competitions at SRSJC: Patersons Securities-EWA Horse of the Year (Winners: David Dobson & Concorde Ego Z) and Brigadoon Produce-Silver Series Qualifiers (Winners: Spook March & Holmwood Valentine), SRSJC 1.05m Open (Winners: Breanna Possingham & Where’s Molly) and Quickmail 1.15m Open (Winners: Rick Dabner & Cavalier Chilly) and NG Equine Junior Classes (Winners: Grace Fuchsbichler & Devereaux Sea Salt).
