Heavy rain throughout the week and unexpected downpours on Friday night forced SRSJC to postpone it’s Saturday, 4 August show outdoors at Brookleigh until the next day, Sunday, 5 August.
SRSJC organisers consulted with competitors, coaches and officials before suspending the show very early on Saturday morning. Weeks of rain and predictions for more had already prompted SRSJC to shift its show from the original location on the grass at the State Equestrian Centre. “Leading up to the show, the weather predictions had looked fine for Saturday and we decided to go ahead since it was on a well-drained sand surface,” said SRSJC Treasurer, Nanette Hollis, who was left in charge of the event while Suzanne McGill was overseas. “However, it ended up pouring all Friday night and didn’t look like clearing on Saturday.”
While some competitors didn’t or couldn’t come to the rescheduled show on Sunday, those who did enjoyed dry weather and perfect jumping conditions. “The arena surface rode beautifully,” said Nanette.
“It’s been so frustrating,” commented SRSJC Chair Suzanne McGill. “Over the past decade, we’ve enjoyed remarkably clear weather for most of our shows. This is the second event in 2018 that SRSJC has had to cancel or postpone.” Organisers feel confident, however, that the sun will shine on its Championship show in Brookleigh’s outdoor arena on 15 & 16 September. “We’ve put in our request with the weather gods for clear weather right now!”
