Showjumping runs under specific rules for competitors, horses and officials that are set and governed internationally by the FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale)  and nationally by EA (Equestrian Australia). The EA rules are in line with those set by the FEI, with additional rules applicable specifically to Australia. Paramount in the rules is ‘the welfare of the horse.’

In line with this, ‘Yellow Cards’ may be issued to those who disobey rules, verbally or physically abuse officials or others or use excessive force that is witnessed and reported to appropriate officials. Individuals who receive Yellow Cards are placed on the Yellow Card list and may be additionally sanctioned if additional breaches occur within a prescribed period. Swan River Showjumping strictly abides by FEI and EA disciplinary guidelines.

FEI and EA guidelines are reviewed and updated each year.
